Tenby North Beach

Pembrokeshire

Dog Friendly Rating: 5/10 The wide sandy beach below Tenby's medieval walls and Ironman Wales swim venue with a complete dog ban from 1 May to 30 September; outstanding off-lead walking outside the season.

Tenby North Beach is the larger of Tenby's two main beaches, a wide sandy arc curving below the medieval town walls north of the harbour. Tenby is one of the jewels of the Welsh coast: a perfectly preserved medieval walled town with brightly painted houses, narrow streets and a vibrant atmosphere. The beach is the setting for major open water swimming events including Ironman Wales. Caldey Island, home to Cistercian monks, is visible offshore.

A complete dog ban applies at Tenby North Beach from 1 May to 30 September. Dogs are not permitted on this beach during the summer season. Outside the restriction season, the full beach is open to dogs and is outstanding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tenby North Beach gets a mixed rating of 5/10 for dog friendliness, and that's largely down to timing. A complete dog ban is in place from 1 May to 30 September, but outside those months the full beach is open to dogs and is genuinely outstanding — a wide, sweeping sandy arc below Tenby's medieval town walls.

No — dogs are banned from Tenby North Beach entirely between 1 May and 30 September. From 1 October through to the end of April, the whole beach is open to dogs with no restrictions, making it a wonderful off-season destination.

The most important thing is to check the date — if it's between May and September, dogs aren't permitted on the beach at all, so plan your visit for the off-season. Parking in Tenby can be very busy, so using the Park and Ride is a good idea if it's available. On the plus side, Tenby town itself has plenty of cafes, pubs and restaurants nearby, so there's plenty to enjoy before or after your walk on the beach.
