Ayr Beach

South Ayrshire

Dog Friendly Rating:5/10Ayr's main resort beach in Burns Country with a central seasonal restriction from 1 May to 30 September, year-round access on sections at each end and the famous Low Green park behind.

Ayr Beach is the main beach of Ayrshire's principal resort town, a long sandy beach backed by the promenade, Low Green park and the town centre. Ayr is Robert Burns' birthplace town, and the Burns Birthplace Museum and Alloway village are just minutes away. The beach is wide, flat and well equipped, with the famous Heads of Ayr cliffs to the south. South Ayrshire Council applies restrictions under local byelaw.

A seasonal restriction applies at Ayr Beach's central section from 1 May to 30 September under South Ayrshire Council byelaws. Dogs are not permitted on the central beach between the town pier and the swimming pond during this period. The northern and southern sections of the beach remain accessible to dogs year-round. Outside the restriction season the full beach is open. Dogs must be kept on leads on the promenade at all times.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Ayr Beach dog friendly?

Ayr Beach is partially dog friendly, but with some important limitations — hence its 3/5 rating in our directory. Dogs are welcome on the northern and southern sections of the beach year-round, and the adjacent Low Green park is a great spot to stretch their legs, but a seasonal restriction applies to the central section during the busier summer months.

  • Are dogs allowed at Ayr Beach year round?

It depends on which part of the beach you're heading to. The northern and southern sections are open to dogs throughout the year, but the central stretch between the town pier and the swimming pond is off-limits to dogs from 1 May to 30 September under South Ayrshire Council byelaws. Outside of that window, the full beach is accessible.

  • What should I know before visiting Ayr Beach with my dog?

The key thing to plan around is the seasonal restriction on the central beach, which runs from 1 May to 30 September — during this period, dogs are not permitted between the town pier and the swimming pond. Dogs must also be kept on leads on the promenade at all times, regardless of season. On the plus side, Ayr is well set up for a day out, with cafes, public toilets and multiple car parks on the seafront and in the town centre nearby.
