Hunstanton South Beach

Norfolk

Dog Friendly Rating:5/10The quieter southern section of Hunstanton's west-facing beach with longer seasonal restrictions (10 April to 31 October) on the central stretch, though South Beach itself offers more dog friendly access.

Hunstanton South Beach is the quieter southern extension of Hunstanton's main seafront, stretching south from the central promenade toward the southern cliffs along The Wash. Hunstanton is the only west-facing seaside resort in Norfolk, giving its beaches a distinctive quality of light and famously spectacular sunsets. The beach is broad and sandy at low tide when The Wash retreats significantly, and the striped cliffs of red and white chalk and carstone to the north of the town are a local geological landmark. South Beach has a more local, residential character compared to the main central beach, with slightly fewer tourists in peak season, and the old lighthouse at the southern end of the promenade is a landmark feature.

Dog restrictions at Hunstanton are among the tightest on the Norfolk coast: dogs are prohibited from the beach between the power boat ramp and the northern end of the promenade from 10 April to 31 October, a longer season than most other Norfolk beaches. South Beach, being south of the main restricted zone, is more accessible to dogs, and the southern stretch toward the old lighthouse allows dogs. Dogs are welcome on the promenade and the green behind the beach but must be kept on leads. Outside the restriction season, the full beach is available and the vast tidal flats of The Wash make for excellent off-lead walking.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Hunstanton South Beach dog friendly?

Hunstanton South Beach is moderately dog friendly, earning a 5/10 rating. Being south of the main restricted zone, it offers more access for dogs than the central beach, and the southern stretch toward the old lighthouse allows dogs year round. The promenade and the green behind the beach are also open to dogs, though leads are required there.

  • Are dogs allowed at Hunstanton South Beach year round?

South Beach itself is accessible to dogs throughout the year, but it's worth knowing that Hunstanton operates some of the tightest seasonal restrictions on the Norfolk coast. Dogs are prohibited from the central stretch — between the power boat ramp and the northern end of the promenade — from 10 April to 31 October, which is a longer season than most nearby beaches. Outside of this period, the full beach opens up and the expansive tidal flats of The Wash make for excellent off-lead walking.

  • What should I know before visiting Hunstanton South Beach with my dog?

It's important to understand where the dog restriction zones begin and end — the prohibited stretch runs from the power boat ramp to the northern end of the promenade during the summer season, so keeping to the southern section will keep you on the right side of the rules. On the promenade and the green behind the beach, dogs are welcome but must be on leads. Parking is available along South Promenade and in town centre car parks a short walk away, and there are cafes and public toilets in the town, though facilities are more limited at the southern end.
