Somebody from number four has come round with a bottle and left the door open, which means both dogs are now conducting a survey of the wrong cottage. The children are upstairs at number three, in theory asleep. Six people have eaten at a table for six and the plates are still on it. Tomorrow the whole thing happens again at the other house, in the other direction.
From the end of the road the bay opens south in one long arc, and the shore going north joins the path towards Seahouses, a couple of miles of sand, rock and dune with no road anywhere in it. Two households with a dog each can set off opposite ways after breakfast and meet in the middle by accident, which happens more often than anyone expects. None of it is closed to dogs at any point in the year.
