4 Smugglers Cove

Beadnell, Northumberland

A three bedroom cottage for six at Beadnell with a small enclosed garden, a ground floor bunk room and the coastal cycle route through the village, two dogs welcome.

The bikes came off the rack first, and the dogs went straight through the low gate to find out where they had gone. 4 Smugglers Cove is a dog friendly cottage at Beadnell, six across three bedrooms with two dogs, and its small enclosed garden opens by that gate onto the parking. The car will not be needed again until Saturday.

The front door lets into lounge and dining room together, two sofas, an easy chair and a table big enough for six, the kitchen beyond. The ground floor bedroom has the bunks, sized for children, with a WC of its own. Two doubles are upstairs, one facing the front garden and one the back, and the single bathroom keeps its shower over the bath. It is compact, and the dogs will have learned all of it inside an hour.

The Coast and Castles route comes through Beadnell on its way from Newcastle to Edinburgh. That is the argument for taking this one. Leave the car where it stands for the week: the beach sits at the end of the road, the village is on foot, and everything past that is on the bike with the sea on your right. Six people and two dogs, the bunks meant for children rather than adults.

North, the route follows the shore towards Bamburgh and on to Lindisfarne. South it runs the dune edge past Newton and down to Alnmouth. Most of it is lane and made track rather than road, so a dog trotting alongside is realistic rather than nerve-racking. What comes home at the end of a day like that is a dog that sleeps straight through the evening, which was the object.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is 4 Smugglers Cove dog friendly?

Yes, 4 Smugglers Cove welcomes up to two dogs. The cottage has a small enclosed garden, so your dogs can settle in safely from the moment you arrive.

  • Are dogs allowed at 4 Smugglers Cove year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, but we'd recommend confirming directly with the owner when you book to be sure.

  • What should I know before visiting 4 Smugglers Cove with my dog?

The cottage is compact, so your dogs will have the run of it fairly quickly — which is no bad thing. The enclosed garden connects via a low gate to the parking area, so it's worth being aware of that when dogs are loose outside. On the plus side, the beach is at the end of the road and the Coast and Castles cycle route passes right through Beadnell, with much of it on lanes and made tracks where a dog alongside is perfectly manageable.
