A La Mer

Appledore, Devon

A four bedroom Appledore house with an enclosed tiered garden reached by its own bridge, three dogs welcome, and a bathroom for every bedroom.

Four bedrooms and four bathrooms is an unusual ratio, and it is the reason to take A La Mer over its neighbours. Eight people stay here without anyone negotiating a shower rota. It sits above Appledore with a snug, a wine fridge, estuary views off the living floor, and three dogs welcome in all of it.

Outside is the oddity, in a good way. The rear garden is enclosed and reached either across a bridge from the house or up external steps to a tiered patio with the hot tub on it. Whilst you decide which level to sit on, your dog has enclosed ground on all of them. Two and a half miles to Westward Ho, three to the car free Tarka Trail, and a shade over four to Saunton Sands, which carries a nine on our map.

The bridge and the steps are worth picturing before you book if your dog is elderly or short in the leg, because reaching the garden means one or the other. Three are welcome. Appledore's pubs will have your dog inside with you rather than tied to a rail outside, which is a small thing that turns an evening from a rota into a night out.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is A La Mer dog friendly?

Yes, A La Mer welcomes up to three dogs and they're allowed throughout the whole house, including the snug and the living floor with its estuary views. The rear garden is fully enclosed, so your dogs have secure outdoor space to roam across all levels of the tiered patio.

  • Are dogs allowed at A La Mer year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's best to confirm directly with the property when you book. What's clear is that dogs are a genuine part of the welcome here, not an afterthought.

  • What should I know before visiting A La Mer with my dog?

The enclosed rear garden is reached either via a bridge from the house or up external steps to the tiered patio, so it's worth thinking about this if your dog is elderly or has short legs. On the plus side, you can bring up to three dogs, the local pubs in Appledore allow dogs inside, and you're within a few miles of Westward Ho, the car-free Tarka Trail, and Saunton Sands.
