The Quantock Hills are on the doorstep at Aldenham Cottage, with miles of rambles that make wonderful dog walks and picnic outings. This pretty detached stone barn has been carefully converted to keep much of its original charm, in a quiet, secluded spot set in 2.5 acres close to Kilve beach, and as a dog friendly bolthole it takes four guests along with two dogs.

You step in through a quirky original front door, ancient, low and wide, into the open plan lounge with its dining area. It has traditional, comfortable furniture and a tiled floor, and the wood burner roars away, its first basket of logs included, while the TV offers Firestick, Freeview and DVD. Two dogs back from the hills will claim the warmth of it within minutes. A dining table and chairs sit in the well equipped kitchen.

Up the stairs, the double and the twin are both cosy, with exposed beams, sloping ceilings and garden views, and the bathroom completes the floor. Outside, the sloping garden is enclosed and set with seating, a lovely place for a barbecue with the family or a morning coffee while the dogs nose about and the day is planned.

Kilve beach is within 0.6 miles, an easy evening stroll with the dogs. Further afield, the West Somerset Railway runs historic steam trains, medieval Dunster has its castle, and Minehead and pretty Porlock are within easy reach, with several quiet bays and sandy coves along the coast for days out.
