Ash Lea - Seahouses

Seahouses, Northumberland

A three bedroom house for six at Seahouses, a boat builder's old home with an enclosed garden and bi-fold doors across the back, two dogs welcome.

Ash Lea was a Seahouses boat builder's own house, and when it was refurbished some of the timber left over from the yard went back into it. Dog friendly, three bedrooms, sleeping six, two dogs on the booking, and the fenced garden lies out the back. Timber from that yard makes the four steps down into it.

The hall has hooks and space for boots, and the lounge off it keeps two sofas, a cushioned window seat and a wood burner. The back was extended and is nearly all glass, bi-fold doors and skylights over a kitchen and dining space with two more sofas, so whoever cooks has company and the dogs have a floor to be underfoot on. A separate WC off the hall is worth more at six people than it sounds.

Half four, and the bi-folds are back. Sand has come in on six people and two dogs and got as far as the middle of the kitchen, where somebody will deal with it later. One dog is lying on the boatyard steps, which hold the warmth. The other has taken the window seat in the lounge, which is not allowed, and everyone has agreed not to see it.

The boats to the Farne Islands leave the harbour a few minutes from the door, for a scatter of rock offshore where puffins nest in their tens of thousands and grey seals haul out on the ledges. Dogs do not go on the boats, which is what the enclosed garden is for. On land the beach lies at the top of the village, and the coast path runs from it both ways with sand under most of its length.
