Badgers Rake is a Grade II listed thatched cottage from the 16th century, carefully renovated and joined by an adjoining annexe. There is room for eleven guests and four dogs in this peaceful spot beneath the Quantock Hills on the Coleridge Way, and an outside tap for washing muddy paws shows a dog friendly house that has thought about the walk home.
Original features run through the L shaped cottage, from feature fireplaces and exposed beams to quirky uneven floors, all combined with modern comforts. The hall leads to a lounge with comfortable sofas and a Smart TV, a light and airy dining room and a galley kitchen. Upstairs, five beautifully decorated bedrooms look out over the countryside or the garden. Plenty of character greets the dogs when they come home from the hills.
Two gardens come with the stay. From the front door of the main cottage there is a large enclosed, secluded garden with a seating area for meals outdoors, and the annexe has a private fenced garden of its own with a lockable gate through to the main one. Lunch goes out to the table while four dogs make their rounds, and the annexe has its own front door and a lounge with a feature Aga.
The Coleridge Way runs for 51 miles through the Somerset countryside, the Brendon Hills and Exmoor, so the dogs can set off on a full day's walking from the doorstep. Watchet is 4 miles away, with its marina and harbour, and rock pooling and fossil hunting beaches either side of the harbour. There are pebble beaches at Blue Anchor and Dunster, steam trains on the West Somerset Railway, and the sandy beach at Minehead.
