Somebody put a roof over part of the decking at Beach View, and that one decision is what turns an outside space into an evening. External steps drop from the balcony to an enclosed deck with seating and the river in front, half of it under cover, so all three dogs this cottage takes can be out there at the end of a day. It is dog friendly for six on a street with no traffic on it.
You arrive into the dining room, drop two steps into the lounge with its electric burner, then rise one into the kitchen, which is how a cottage this old organises itself. Bedrooms run over the two floors above, two doubles and a bunk room, reached by steep cottage stairs, with the bathroom on the first. A basement off the back holds the washing machine, where sandy dog towels end up.
Half six on a summer evening, tide filling in front of the house and Instow lit across the water. All three dogs have found the covered end of the deck and gone to sleep on it in a heap. Somebody has walked to the quay for chips and is taking far too long about it, because on lanes this narrow you cannot get anywhere without being spoken to.
Appledore runs on cobbled streets too tight for cars, so the village is walkable with a dog on a loose lead. The estuary sits in front, the dunes at Instow opposite, a ferry crossing between them in season. North of the river mouth the big beaches begin, Saunton with its dunes behind, then Croyde. Clovelly and the Hartland cliffs are the drive to make once the sand is done.
