There are two pieces of outdoor ground here and they are not equivalent. The courtyard behind is paved and enclosed, a suntrap with a table and a run of benches on it. The front is a small garden behind picket fencing on the village street, and the courtyard is the one two dogs get loose in. Bourne Cottage occupies the middle of Broughton in Hampshire, dog friendly, six across three bedrooms.
Coming in, the kitchen is first and it is a generous one, a breakfast bar along it for whoever is up early. The dining room next door has corner benches round its table, a wood burner of its own and a corner given over to sitting with a book, which is an odd thing to find in a room built round eating. A utility off the back takes the washing and the dog towels, and a WC sits on this floor.
Upstairs the landing is broad enough to be a room in itself and leads to three bedrooms, two super kings and a twin whose beds sit at different heights, with a bathroom holding a bath and a walk in shower set apart. Two dogs stay below, where the kitchen, the fire and the courtyard door are, and none of it asks them to negotiate a staircase.
Broughton runs to one village street and the cottage is on it, and what leaves it is chalk country lane in most directions. Stockbridge stands 4.5 miles west, one long wide high street given over to independent shops and somewhere to eat, with a waymarked riverside walk going out along the water. Two dogs get lane at the door and a valley floor at the end of a short drive.
