Four thousand years old and sitting on the edge of a village, which is the strange charm of it. The Flowerdown Barrows are three well preserved Bronze Age burial mounds at Littleton, once part of a much larger barrow cemetery since ploughed out around them. There are two bowl barrows and, more unusually, the largest and finest disc barrow in Hampshire, a form much rarer than the standard round barrow.
While you pick out the disc barrow's low central mound inside its wide ditch and bank, your dog gets a small, enclosed patch of rough grassland. It is a short stop rather than a walk, but quiet, level and easy, and the footpaths around Littleton and the Dever valley give you more if you want it.
Free, open at all times, no ticket and no facilities. Head for Littleton off the B3049 northeast of Winchester, entrance gate by the junction of Main Road, Kennel Lane and Deane Down Drove. This site is unstaffed and carries no published dog rules. Please keep dogs off the barrow mounds themselves, which are fragile scheduled monuments.
