Nagshead, 1.2 miles off, is an RSPB reserve in old oak where pied flycatchers still use nest boxes put up a century ago and the woodpeckers are loud enough to find without looking. Parkend sits just below it, and the old coal railway out of the village is now a track running down through the trees to Whitecroft. Three dogs get oak woodland in every direction with no road to cross to reach any of it.
