Almost nothing in this lodge was bought new. The table is reclaimed, the china on the open racks is old and mismatched, the pictures came from people who live nearby, and the effect is a room nothing is going to be ruined in by a wet dog walking through. Outside there are two places to sit and they are on different levels. The deck has the table and the view; the enclosed garden below has the grill and a swinging egg chair that will be argued over. Late afternoon, and the egg chair has gone to whoever moved fastest. Somebody else has the deck and the long view over the pastures, plates are out on the table indoors, and two dogs lie on the step between the levels because from there they see both parties at once.
South down the lane, Leominster is a market town built on wool money with a priory church at the heart of it, part parish church and part monastic ruin, three naves wide and none of them matching. The streets behind it are full of antique and curiosity shops. Two dogs get a town that has never been smartened up.
