Braunton claims to be the largest village in England and behaves like a small town, which for once is useful, because you can buy everything you need without driving to Barnstaple. Byewood is a two bedroom cottage on the edge of it with a wood burner, the first basket of logs included, and a hot tub outside. Four people and two dogs.
Walk in for the bakery and the pubs. Your dog has an enclosed garden of lawn and decking to hold the fort, and then two of the better stretches of sand in the south west. Saunton Sands is two and a half miles off and we have it at a nine. The Saunton Sands and Braunton Burrows walk starts at about the same distance and runs into the largest dune system in Britain, which from a dog's height is several square miles of marram grass, rabbit scent and soft footing.
Properly enclosed rather than a patio with a gate, the garden turns first thing and last thing into a door rather than a decision. It takes two dogs. Croyde is under three miles if you want the surf crowd, and the Tarka Trail about the same if you would rather your dog had something flat and traffic free. Braunton sitting in between gives you the rare thing of a village big enough to have a vet, which is not a consideration until it abruptly is.
