Chaxhill Barn

Chaxhill, Gloucestershire

A seven bedroom barn sleeping fifteen at Chaxhill with a walled garden, a detached annexe standing in it and four dogs welcome, near Westbury on Severn.

The garden at Chaxhill Barn is walled, and you cross it to reach the door. That is the right way round for anybody turning up with fifteen people and four dogs: the animals are inside a wall before anyone finds the boot lobby. It is a dog friendly barn with a detached annexe standing in the same walled ground, so part of the party sleeps across a garden rather than along a corridor. At this size that is the difference between one building and one household.

Seven bedrooms and six bathrooms is what makes it work, five of them on the ground floor. The barn runs over three floors with low beams and the odd unexpected step, as a building of its age does. A vaulted lounge takes the middle, a mezzanine over it holds a pool table, and a snug absorbs whoever has had enough. Four dogs have a walled garden with no road anywhere near it.

Saturday evening and the barn is at full capacity. Somebody is losing at pool on the mezzanine, the long table below has been laid for fifteen and set upon by about nine, and the snug has been annexed by two people and three of the dogs. The fourth is still out in the walled garden, where it has spent most of the day.

Up a wooded side valley 2 miles north, Flaxley stands where an abbey did, the house that replaced it still among old trees with a lake below and a lane in that goes nowhere else. Blaisdon, the next village round, is known for a dark red plum that grows properly nowhere but here. Four dogs get lanes and orchard country between the river and the forest edge.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Chaxhill Barn dog friendly?

Yes, Chaxhill Barn welcomes up to four dogs. The property has a walled garden that encloses both the main barn and the detached annexe, so dogs are safely contained before anyone even reaches the front door — a genuinely practical setup for a group arriving with animals in tow.

  • Are dogs allowed at Chaxhill Barn year round?

The listing doesn't specify seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the property directly to confirm availability and any conditions around your stay. What is clear is that the setup — walled garden, no nearby road — is designed with dogs as a permanent consideration rather than an afterthought.

  • What should I know before visiting Chaxhill Barn with my dog?

The walled garden is the key thing: dogs are contained within it as soon as you arrive, with no road nearby, so it's a relaxed environment for letting them settle in. Inside, the barn has low beams and unexpected steps across three floors, so it's worth being aware of the layout if you have a dog that follows you everywhere. The surrounding area offers lanes and orchard country between the River Severn and the Forest of Dean edge, with good walking in the wooded valleys nearby.
