There is a fountain in the courtyard and the cottage looks straight out onto it. Coachmans Cottage was the coach house and stables for Pencombe Hall, put up in 1862, and it now takes four as a dog friendly stay, five star, with a gated private garden of its own on the far side of the building. Two small dogs come with it, and small is the owners' own condition rather than a rule invented for the listing.
The summer house at the end of that garden is the surprise. It is cedar, insulated, double glazed and heated, with a table and cushioned seats inside, so it works as a second room rather than as a shed, and two small dogs treat it as more indoor floor that happens to sit outside. The cottage is attached to the owners' house around the courtyard, the grounds run to an acre, and guests are welcome to walk them.
Four in the afternoon and nobody is in the cottage. The kettle went on, somebody carried the whole business out to the summer house, and that is where the day has settled: door open, two small dogs asleep on cushions they were not offered, the fountain going in the courtyard.
Bromyard Downs, 4 miles east, is several hundred acres of open common on a ridge above the town, gorse and bracken with old quarry hollows cut into it and not a fence on any of it. Brockhampton sits below the far side, a moated timber manor with a gatehouse standing on the bridge. Two small dogs get open ground where the going is soft, and lanes back that carry almost nothing.
