The water here is not the sea. Hickling Broad lies 1.1 miles from the door, the largest of the Norfolk Broads, and what stands round it is reed, dyke and wet grazing rather than sand, which for three dogs is an entirely different set of smells from a week spent on a beach. Cobble Barn is dog friendly, sleeping six at Hickling across three bedrooms, with a large enclosed garden and three dogs allowed.

Six sleep across three rooms, the largest of them king size, sharing a bathroom, a separate WC and one en-suite. Underfloor heat runs through the ground floor. A utility off the kitchen takes the washer and dryer and everything three dogs manage to bring back in on themselves, and the wood burner in the lounge sees to whatever is left of the drying.

There are two rooms to sit in rather than one, the lounge with that burner and a snug behind it with a games console, which at six people means the television arguments happen in separate rooms and nobody has to win one. The garden outside is large and enclosed with a charcoal barbecue out there, and three dogs can be doing three separate things in it at once.

Hickling itself is a small village with pubs in it and the water a short walk out. The reserve round the Broad is reed bed, open water and grazing marsh with paths and boardwalk laid through it, and past that the country stays flat, wet and quiet, cut about everywhere by dykes. A dog gets level going, water on both sides of a path, and an enormous quantity of birdlife to be entirely uninterested in.
