Cresswell is the last village before Druridge Bay begins, a single row facing a beach that runs north for miles without a break. The enclosed garden at Coquet House climbs stone steps to a gate, and the far side of that gate is the sand. It is dog friendly, eight across four bedrooms, three dogs allowed, an unusual number at this size. Whoever wakes first up there gets the balcony to themselves.
The house is terraced over three floors, which spreads eight people better than a wide one would. On the ground are the lounge and its wood burner, a kitchen and dining room behind bi-fold doors, a utility and a shower room, so nothing wet is carried upstairs, dogs included. Three bedrooms and the family bathroom take the middle floor, and the king in the eaves at the top has a bath of its own.
Three dogs is the number that decides this one. Two households can each bring an animal and stay inside it, and with eight beds and three bathrooms nobody queues. The summer house takes whoever wants to read, the balcony whoever wakes first, and the beach the dogs whenever somebody will open the gate.
Druridge Bay runs 7 miles north from the village, one unbroken strand with a dune line behind it. Behind the dunes is the surprise: a chain of lakes and reedbeds left where opencast workings were flooded and handed back to birds, now a run of reserves with hides and paths between. Dogs have the beach all year and the inland tracks outside the nesting season. The pele tower at the end of the village opens a few days a year.
