Both bedrooms have skylights and both skylights have blackout blinds, which sounds like a small thing until you have been woken at half four in June by a dog who has noticed it is light. Duck Down Cottage sits in the middle of Embleton with a raised garden behind it, enclosed, up four steps from a shared path. Four people, two dogs, and a dog friendly village where the bay starts where the street runs out.
The way in is the back door into a small hall, and the front door opens onto the street through a vestibule with the coat hooks in it, so the cottage has two ends and the dogs learn which is theirs inside a day. Lounge and dining share the front room with the kitchen off it. The shower room is large with a walk-in shower. Two steps up are the double and the twin, which zips together into a king.
The garden takes the light from mid morning, and by then somebody has carried the coffee out and both dogs have followed the coffee. Down in the village a delivery van is reversing. Past the roofs there is a line of dune and then nothing until Scandinavia. Nobody has decided anything about the day, and the tide will decide it for them.
Embleton Bay starts at the end of the village and is reached on foot in a few minutes through the golf links, the path running out between banks of sea buckthorn onto sand. The bay curves a mile and a half south to the headland. No month of the year closes it to dogs, the far end is generally empty, and the links are crossed on a right of way.
