1 / 23Family Tides
Swanage, Dorset
A three bedroom Swanage house with an enclosed rear garden, two dogs welcome, and Old Harry Rocks and Studland Bay both inside three and a half miles.
Swanage is the practical base for the Isle of Purbeck, and Family Tides is a three bedroom house in it with an enclosed rear garden, decking above it and two dogs welcome. It sleeps five, which is an awkward number most houses solve by putting somebody on a sofa, and here it is three proper bedrooms.
The walking on this peninsula is the best in Dorset and your dog gets all of it. Swanage North Beach is one and four tenths of a mile. The Studland Beach to Old Harry Rocks walk is two and nine tenths and we rate it a nine, running along chalk cliffs out to the stacks at the end of the headland. Knoll Beach at Studland is three and two tenths, and the Nine Barrow Down ridge walk at three and four tenths gives you a long chalk spine with views off both sides.
There are five steps down from the decking into the enclosed garden, which is worth knowing for a dog with short legs or old hips. Two are welcome. Swanage is also the practical answer to a Purbeck problem: the best walking here is spread out and most of it wants a short drive, so a base with a garden to come home to beats a remote cottage where the dog ends up in the car twice a day.
