Harbourmaster Cottage

Seahouses, Northumberland

A two bedroom cottage for four at the end of a quiet lane in Seahouses, with an enclosed patio at the front and the beach a short walk off, two dogs welcome.

One bathroom between four, two dogs, and a lane that stops at the door. The enclosed patio at Harbourmaster Cottage is at the front rather than the back, so the seating faces up a road nothing comes down. It is dog friendly, a double and a twin above with the whole of the living space below them, at the end of a quiet row in Seahouses.

Indoors the lounge takes the front, leather sofas and a coal effect fire, and the kitchen and its table fill the back. It is plain and comfortable rather than designed, and its virtue for a dog is that all of it is one flat floor with a door to the patio at the end. Upstairs the two bedrooms share a bathroom, and the shower is over the bath.

What this one buys, instead of space, is position. Everything in the village is a walk from the end of the lane, so a couple with two children, or two adults with two dogs, spend the week without touching the car. There is off street room for one small car, the rest of it on the road. Four people and one bathroom means a rota, and it is worth saying so.

Seahouses has kept a lifeboat since 1827 and the station still stands on the harbour, doing the job rather than remembering it. Grace Darling is buried up the coast; she rowed out from Longstone light with her father in 1838 and took survivors off a wrecked steamer, and the lamp room she grew up under is still out on the last of the Farne Islands. The beach is minutes from the lane and dogs use it in every month.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Harbourmaster Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Harbourmaster Cottage welcomes up to two dogs. The ground floor living space is all on one flat level with direct access to an enclosed patio at the front, which makes it a practical setup for dogs.

  • Are dogs allowed at Harbourmaster Cottage year round?

The beach at Seahouses is described as one that dogs use in every month of the year, so there's no off-season here. It's a short walk from the end of the lane, which makes it easy to build into your daily routine whatever time of year you visit.

  • What should I know before visiting Harbourmaster Cottage with my dog?

The cottage sits at the end of a quiet lane in Seahouses, with an enclosed front patio and a flat ground floor that connects straight out to it — useful if your dog needs to get outside quickly.
