Hay Bluff House is a 16th century cottage set just beneath Lord Hereford's Knob and Hay Bluff in the Black Mountains, with acres of gardens and fields and a private waterfall of its own. Up to four well behaved dogs can join you at this five star, dog friendly hideaway for eight, where you can stride or ride out across beautiful terrain right from the doorstep.

It retains all its former character, with cruck oak beams, exposed stonework and a homely interior full of rich hues, and there are welcoming log burners in both living rooms and in the country kitchen, which has underfloor heating, a breakfast table and two ovens. One living room holds a spacious dining table and antique furniture for a celebratory meal, while the larger drawing room offers comfortable sofas, a Smart TV and the pool table, with table tennis out in the garage. Dogs are asked to keep off the furniture and stay out of the bedrooms, so the hearths are where they will settle.

Two zip and link super kings share the ground floor with a bathroom, while the king, en suite, is reached from the living room. Outside, the fenced garden and patio gather a wood-fired hot tub, a fire pit and garden furniture, a fine place to watch the evening come in with four dogs gathered round.

Tregoyd riding stables and outdoor activity centre are at the foot of the mountain lane, with great trails across the hills. The Wye Valley offers canoeing and fishing, and Hay-on-Wye, home of the famous Hay Festival, has 30 bookshops, cafes and shops for a day in town with the dogs.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Hay Bluff House dog friendly?

Yes, Hay Bluff House welcomes up to four dogs, which puts it well ahead of most holiday lets. Beyond the fenced garden and patio, the property has its own fields where dogs can run freely without the worry of roads or boundaries — a rare and genuinely useful thing to find.

  • Are dogs allowed at Hay Bluff House year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, and with three log burners, underfloor heating and acres of private fields, it's set up to work just as well in January as in July. If you want to confirm availability for specific dates, it's worth checking directly with the owner.

  • What should I know before visiting Hay Bluff House with my dog?

The owner asks that dogs stay off the furniture and out of the bedrooms, so it's worth reading those house rules before you book rather than on arrival. The house also has a lot of changes in level — steps between rooms and steep stone stairs to the top bedroom — so it's good to bear that in mind if you have a dog that struggles with stairs.
