Hay-on-Wye, Herefordshire
A three bedroom house for six at Hay-on-Wye with enclosed gardens looking out over the countryside, a patio and two dogs welcome.
The gardens here look out of the town rather than into it, which for a house at Hay is the unusual part. Hay House sleeps six over three bedrooms, five star and dog friendly, its enclosed gardens running out to a patio with open country past the end of them. Two dogs are welcome. Hay is a town of terraces, and a garden that finishes in fields instead of rooftops changes what a week here is.
Three bedrooms take six, two kings and a twin, with a bathroom, an en-suite and a separate WC between them so the mornings do not queue. There is a Mud Daddy kept outside for the state two dogs come back in. The kitchen and living space are finished to a standard the size of the house does not prepare you for, and sound runs through the whole building.
Late afternoon and everybody has drifted outside. The BBQ is doing something slow, two dogs are lying on the warm end of the patio having been rinsed off an hour earlier, and somebody has walked into the middle of town and come back with more books than the shelf at home will take. Beyond the far hedge the hills have lost their detail.
In the middle of the town, Hay Castle stands over the square: a Norman gate tower with a Jacobean house grown onto the side of it, burnt twice, left a shell for forty years and open again now with a garden and a view off the top. Downstream the Wye runs east under the old toll bridge at Whitney, timber-decked, privately owned and one of the last of its kind. Two dogs get riverbank one way and a castle the other.

Book with holidaycottages.co.ukFrequently Asked Questions
Is Hay House dog friendly?
Yes, Hay House welcomes up to two dogs. The property has enclosed gardens that open onto a patio with open countryside beyond, so there's plenty of space for them to stretch out after a day's walking.
Are dogs allowed at Hay House year round?
The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions, so it's worth contacting the property directly to confirm availability for your dates. What is clear is that dogs are a genuinely considered part of a stay here, not an afterthought.
What should I know before visiting Hay House with my dog?
The maximum is two dogs, and the enclosed gardens mean you won't need to worry about them straying. There's a Mud Daddy kept outside for post-walk clean-ups, which is handy given how much good walking and riverbank access there is right from the door.
