A spotting scope is set up in the master bedroom at Holy Island View, and through it you might see visitors climbing the steps to the castle on Holy Island, or a seal or two. The cottage looks out across rolling countryside to Lindisfarne from the hamlet of Middleton, near Bamburgh. Up to four dogs are very welcome at this dog friendly cottage for five, which has an enclosed lawn garden with a stone flagged patio.
The house rules for the dogs are clear: they stay off the beds and are not allowed upstairs, and you bring their own beds and plenty of blankets to protect the sofa. In return there is a dedicated dog wash area by the rear patio with tethers and a warm water tap, a log cabin style games room with pool, table tennis, table football and darts, and a wood burner in a stone fireplace with unlimited logs.
All four dogs come back sandy and line up at the wash area, where the tethers hold them while somebody works the hose. Somebody else has gone up to the scope for another look along the coast to Holy Island. Once the wood burner is going, all four are dry and settled on their own beds in the lounge, and after dark the garden is the place for a last turn with them under the stars.
The Lindisfarne Causeway is a 10 minute drive away, and the village of Belford is a mile from the cottage. St Cuthbert's Way and St Cuthbert's Cave are close by, rewarding walking country for the dogs, while the seaside villages of Seahouses, Beadnell, Newton-by-the-Sea and Craster are all an easy drive, as are Alnwick and Berwick-upon-Tweed on either side.
