Kielder Castle Cottage

Kielder, Northumberland

A two bedroom single storey cottage for four at Kielder, opposite the castle, with an enclosed garden patio, a sun room and forest at the fence, two dogs welcome.

Two dogs, four people, and one pine marten that visits the garden. It has a taste for jam sandwiches cut small, the sort of thing you only learn from whoever owns the place. Kielder Castle Cottage is dog friendly and single storey, an enclosed patio at the side and a lawn behind, standing opposite the castle in Kielder Water and Forest Park.

Two steps at the side door let into a hall, and the whole cottage runs from it on one level. The lounge has the wood burner, and a sun room off it holds the dining table facing the garden, which is where you sit to see what turns up in it. The kitchen is beyond, a utility and a separate WC past that. The king and the twin share the hall with the bathroom, and the dogs never meet a stair.

The cottage suits people who mean to be outside all day. Everything at Kielder starts inside a mile: forest tracks, the water, bike hire, the castle itself. There is one bathroom and one floor, so an afternoon indoors puts four people and both dogs in a small warm building, which many households would call the point.

Kielder Forest is the largest planted forest in England and it starts at the fence. Waymarked tracks run out of the village into it as far as anybody cares to go, and the trees hold red squirrels in numbers gone from most of the country. The castle opposite was a Duke of Northumberland's shooting lodge and is the visitor centre now. Up the hill the observatory runs sessions after dark under skies with no light in them for miles. Dogs are welcome on the forest roads throughout.
