Easington is a scatter of houses in the fields behind Bamburgh, near enough the coast to see it and far enough back to be quiet after dark. Marys Crag View looks across that ground to the water at Budle Bay. Six sleep here, two dogs come as well, and two of the three bedrooms have sliding doors onto the decking, which is about as dog friendly as a bedroom gets.
The living space is a single room, lounge, dining and kitchen together with a wood burner and doors out to the first of two fully enclosed gardens. The master keeps a walk-in shower to itself. The second double and the single share a shower room between them. Both doubles open straight onto the deck, and a dog stirring at five is let out without the rest of the house knowing.
Nine in the evening and the fire pit is lit on the patio. Both dogs lie on the decking, heads turned to the field where something is moving that nobody else can make out. The sliding doors have been left open with the wood burner going, which will be regretted. Beyond the fence the ground drops towards the bay, and by ten there is nothing showing anywhere but sky.
This coast is built on one thing. The Whin Sill is a sheet of dark volcanic rock forced between the beds under Northumberland, and where it breaks surface it makes the crag at Bamburgh, the platform the castle stands on, the islands offshore and the outcrops in the fields around this cottage. The sand at Bamburgh begins 4 miles off and runs a long way beneath the walls, and dogs have it in every month of the year.
