Miles of walking start from the front door at Middle Pentre Barn, where a stile leads straight onto the National Trust's Begwns. This spacious oak framed barn welcomes two well behaved dogs, set into the hillside with views across to Painscastle, and it makes a dog friendly family base with Hay-on-Wye 5 miles below.

Double doors open into a light and airy lobby, then on to a generously sized lounge, furnished for comfort around a Smart TV, and a spacious open plan kitchen and diner whose large table gathers all six. The utility room has space for outdoor shoes and coats, and this floor also has a wet room. For the dogs, a hose on the side of the barn is there for washing them down after a muddy walk. Underfloor heating on both floors keeps the whole barn cosy.

Upstairs, a spacious landing with a reading chair leads to three well proportioned bedrooms, two of them en suite, and a family bathroom. At the front of the barn a garden table with parasols and a charcoal barbecue takes in the far reaching vistas. The barn is surrounded by a fenced garden, and as livestock graze the fields around it, the owners ask that dogs are supervised at all times and suggest a long lead.

The Begwns offer well marked trails, an abundance of wildlife and 360 degree views across the Brecon Beacons, the Black Mountains and the Radnorshire hills, and the Begwns Roundabout is less than 1 mile away for a walk with the dogs. Hay-on-Wye has its castle, independent shops and cafes, The Warren is a riverside beach on the Wye, and canoes can be hired at Hay and Glasbury.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Middle Pentre Barn dog friendly?

Yes, Middle Pentre Barn welcomes up to two dogs. The barn has been set up with dogs in mind — there's an enclosed garden that wraps the whole building, a ground floor wet room right next to the utility room for washing dogs off after a walk, and underfloor heating on both floors so wet coats dry without any fuss.

  • Are dogs allowed at Middle Pentre Barn year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, and nothing about the setup suggests otherwise. The practical layout — utility room, wet room, underfloor heating — is designed for dogs coming in off the hill in all weathers, which suggests it's a year-round welcome.

  • What should I know before visiting Middle Pentre Barn with my dog?

The booking allows up to two dogs. There's a stile in the garden fence leading directly onto hundreds of acres of National Trust common land — grass, bracken and gorse with tracks for walkers and riders — so off-lead exercise is essentially immediate. When you return, the wet room and utility room are at the rear of the barn, so dogs come in and get cleaned up before they reach any of the softer living spaces.
