There are three degrees of freedom here and they come in order. An enclosed patio and garden at the door; a separate secure field, fenced, kept for dogs; and beyond both of those the meadows in the grounds, which guests are free to wander. Mistletoe Lodge sleeps two at Stoke Prior, dog friendly, a king bedroom and its shower room, a wood burner, and nothing else at all. A dog gets three different sizes of freedom here, and whoever is holding the lead chooses which one the hour needs.
That sequence is the reason to book it rather than any one part of it. Seven in the morning is the garden. Mid morning is the field, where two dogs run flat out inside a fence with nobody watching the boundary. The afternoon is the meadows and the farm animals in them, which is when the leads go back on. Plenty of places manage one of the three. All of them inside a hundred yards is another matter.
By the middle of the week the pattern runs itself. Whoever gets up first opens the door onto the patio, the field happens after breakfast, and by ten the lodge is empty and both dogs are out in it. There is a lockable shed for the bikes and board games for the evenings, and a building this small heats through in about twenty minutes.
Three miles east, Berrington Hall stands on a shelf above the Herefordshire plain with a Capability Brown park laid out below it, a lake with an island in the middle and long views west to the Welsh hills. Dogs go on leads through the parkland. Two dogs get eighteenth century landscape and a lake they are not allowed in.
