This was the village school. It still reads like one from the outside and it still has the proportions inside, tall rooms and a hall with doors off it to the lounge, the dining room and the kitchen, which gives two dogs more circulation space than a cottage of the same bedroom count ever manages. Old School House turns that building into a dog friendly six across three bedrooms, Syderstone in Norfolk, two dogs allowed.

The garden is large and enclosed, and there is a pond in it. The owners flag that for anybody bringing small children and say nothing at all about dogs, which is worth turning round: a warning written for a toddler is a warning a dog owner should read as their own. No size is given, so none is claimed here. It is inside the fence and it is the one thing to walk a new animal past on a lead before letting it go.

Indoors the lounge takes two sofas and an open fire, and logs come with the let through the colder months. The kitchen leads to a utility holding the washer dryer and then to the old boiler room, which holds a second and much larger fridge freezer, so a party of six can shop once. A shower room sits down here with a walk-in shower, which is where a wet dog is dealt with. Three bedrooms and two more bathrooms are above.

Syderstone Common opens a short walk from the door and it is not ordinary ground: rare wet heath that holds natterjack toads, and woodlark on the drier parts. Two dogs get four square miles of it, and a lead where the pools are.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Old School House - Syderstone dog friendly?

Yes, Old School House welcomes up to two dogs. The property has a large enclosed garden, and the ground floor includes a shower room with a walk-in shower that's well suited to washing muddy paws and wet coats after a day out.

  • Are dogs allowed at Old School House - Syderstone year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so there's nothing to suggest they aren't welcome throughout the year. It's always worth confirming directly with the owners when you book, particularly if you're planning a visit during busier periods.

  • What should I know before visiting Old School House - Syderstone with my dog?

There is a pond in the enclosed garden, and while the owners flag this primarily with small children in mind, it's sensible to walk any dog around it on a lead before letting them loose. Syderstone Common, a short walk from the house, covers around four square miles of rare wet heath and is a brilliant place to stretch your dog's legs, though leads are asked for near the pools.
