Plumtree

Longhoughton, Northumberland

A single storey one bedroom cottage for two at Longhoughton with a vaulted living room, an electric AGA and an enclosed garden with a sheltered corner, two dogs welcome.

The glazed door at the end of the room stands open and two dogs are going in and out of it for no reason either could explain. A one bedroom cottage that takes a pair of them is a generous thing, and it is the dog friendly fact that decides Plumtree: single storey, sleeping two, with the enclosed garden beyond that door. Inside is one vaulted room with beams, stone walls and arched windows in it.

Everything but the bedroom is in that room: an electric AGA at the kitchen end, a table, a long sofa, and height enough that the beams read as a feature and not a hazard. The bedroom is through the back with a dressing area attached and the bathroom beyond it. That bathroom door measures 179cm, an old doorway in an old building, and worth a glance before carrying a dog through it.

Couples with two dogs is the entire brief and the cottage makes no pretence of stretching. One bedroom, one bathroom, one room to live in, nothing to arrange. The AGA keeps the kitchen end warm from morning, which two wet dogs work out inside a day. Outside, a sheltered corner of the garden keeps seating for the end of the evening.

Longhoughton Steel is the beach at the end of the village, a low rock shelf with sand between the ribs of it and pools that fill and empty twice a day. South of that, Sugar Sands and Rumbling Kern are two small coves reached on foot, the second with a bathing house on the rock above it, built for a family who came down from the hall. Dogs have the whole of this shore and rarely anybody on it to mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Plumtree dog friendly?

Plumtree is genuinely built around dogs — two of them, specifically. The enclosed garden, single-storey layout and electric AGA that keeps the kitchen end warm are all things a couple travelling with two dogs will appreciate quickly, and the nearby beaches at Longhoughton Steel, Sugar Sands and Rumbling Kern are open to dogs throughout.

  • Are dogs allowed at Plumtree year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, and the cottage's setup — an AGA for warmth, an enclosed garden and easy access to quiet beaches — suits a visit in any season. For confirmation of availability at specific times of year, it's worth checking directly with the property.

  • What should I know before visiting Plumtree with my dog?

The cottage takes two dogs and the enclosed garden gives them somewhere to roam freely, with a glazed door opening straight out from the living room. One practical note: the bathroom doorway is 179cm high, which is worth bearing in mind if you're planning to carry a dog through it. Beyond the cottage, the surrounding coastline is quiet and largely to yourselves — Longhoughton Steel is at the end of the village, with Sugar Sands and Rumbling Kern reachable on foot to the south.
