Brancaster was Branodunum first, a Roman fort put on this shore to watch the water, and the village kept the name in worn down form. Brancaster's beach is a wide one with a firm bottom and a great deal of it at low water, and Scolt Head Island lies off the far end of the harbour channel with terns nesting on it in season. Behind the beach the marsh and the creeks run east along the staithe, and the Norfolk Coast Path crosses the whole of it, so a dog gets sand or saltmarsh depending on which direction it is pointed.
