Porlock Sunnyside

Porlock, Somerset

A three bedroom cottage above Porlock with an enclosed terraced garden, one dog welcome, and four Exmoor walks all starting within a mile and a half.

Porlock sits in a bowl under Exmoor with the sea at one end and a famously steep hill at the other. Sunnyside is a three bedroom cottage above the village on a no through road, reached by external stone steps, with a wood burner and one dog welcome. Walks start from the door.

Four of them are ours and all four begin within a mile and a half. Porlock Weir and Porlock Marsh, a shingle ridge with a drowned forest behind it, sits a mile off and scores an eight on our map. Porlock Beach is one and a tenth. The Horner Wood circular is one and a tenth and we rate it an eight, running into one of the largest ancient oak woodlands in Britain. Selworthy Beacon is one and three tenths. Marsh, shingle, oak wood and open moor inside twenty minutes of the door, which is about as much variety as a dog can ask of one week.

Enclosed and terraced and reached by steep stone steps, as is the cottage itself, the garden suits a single dog with working legs rather than one that has given up on stairs. What you get in exchange is four walks from the door and a village sitting underneath you, which for a fit dog and a week on Exmoor is a fair bargain.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Porlock Sunnyside dog friendly?

Yes, Porlock Sunnyside welcomes one dog. It's a three bedroom cottage above Porlock village with an enclosed terraced garden, and four dog walks all start within a mile and a half of the door — taking in Porlock Weir, Porlock Marsh, Horner Wood, and Selworthy Beacon.

  • Are dogs allowed at Porlock Sunnyside year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the property directly to confirm availability for your travel dates. Given the year-round appeal of Exmoor walking, it's a great base in any season.

  • What should I know before visiting Porlock Sunnyside with my dog?

The cottage is reached by external stone steps, and the enclosed terraced garden has the same steep character — so it suits a dog that's comfortable on stairs rather than one with limited mobility. One dog is welcome, and the setup works best for a fit, active dog ready to make the most of the walks on the doorstep.
