Rafters

Chathill, Northumberland

A three bedroom stone cottage for six at Chathill near Beadnell with an enclosed garden, a swing set and bikes and surf boards to borrow, two dogs welcome.

Bikes and surf boards here are yours to borrow, which most cottages do not offer and which changes what has to go in the car. Rafters is a stone cottage at Chathill, dog friendly, three bedrooms, six people, two dogs, its garden behind enclosed and holding a lawn, a patio and a set of children's swings. Two allocated spaces sit in the shared courtyard at the front.

Indoors the hall takes coats, wellies and leads before anything, dogs included, gets any further. The kitchen and dining area is beyond, beams over cream units and a table for six. The lounge next door has two sofas and a gas fire built to look like a wood burner, with windows onto the garden one way and the courtyard the other. Above, the double keeps high ceilings and beams, two twins sit alongside, and the one bathroom has its shower over the bath.

Four o'clock, and the boards went back into the shed an hour ago. One dog is asleep under the swings. The other has not yet forgiven anybody for the sea. Somebody is making tea and somebody else is on the games console. Two households have shared this courtyard all week and learned about half of each other's names, which is the right amount.

Chathill has a station on the East Coast main line, odd for a hamlet this size, and the London trains pass a field away, though only a couple stop. Preston Tower stands a mile off, a pele raised in 1392 against the Scots, still full height with a clock in the top. The beaches are 2.3 miles east, near enough that a dog is on sand at Beadnell ten minutes after leaving.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Rafters dog friendly?

Yes, Rafters welcomes up to two dogs. It's a stone cottage with an enclosed rear garden, so there's a safe outdoor space for them to settle into after a day out.

  • Are dogs allowed at Rafters year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, but it's always worth checking directly with the owner when you book to confirm availability and any conditions for your stay.

  • What should I know before visiting Rafters with my dog?

The hallway is set up to handle arrivals properly — coats, wellies, leads and dogs all get sorted there before anyone goes further into the cottage, which is a thoughtful touch. The enclosed garden gives dogs somewhere to roam freely, and Beadnell beach is just 2.3 miles away, so you can have them on sand within ten minutes of leaving.
