Beyond the main kitchen at Ravenslaw House there is a separate Butler's kitchen with its own oven, hob and fridge, a real gift to whoever is cooking in a house that seats eighteen at one long table. Built in 1892 in the style of a Scottish country house, it was once the home of William Hardy, the famous fishing tackle manufacturer, and today this five star house is dog friendly, with four dogs allowed and a gate through to an enclosed garden.
Each of the nine bedrooms has its own en suite. Five have four poster beds, three are on the ground floor, and one of those comes with its own separate lounge. The rest of the ground floor holds a main lounge with an open fire, an elegant dining room with another, a conservatory and a reading room, and there is a grand piano for a sing along, so four dogs and eighteen people have handsome rooms to settle in.
Before dinner the house divides happily. Somebody is at the grand piano, a few have gone out to the hot tub and the four seater sauna on the sheltered patio, and two of the dogs are stretched out by the lounge fire. The other two are flat out beside them, in no hurry for anything but the walk after dinner.
Alnwick is an easy walk from the door, with its magnificent castle, the renowned Alnwick Garden, the market, independent shops and Europe's largest second hand bookstore. Four dogs make for plenty of walking: the sandy beach at Alnmouth is nearby, as are Amble's fishing port and Warkworth Castle, and Cragside at Rothbury and the National Park are a drive away.
