Somebody resisted the urge to knock the Butler's kitchen through. It sits behind the main one with its own oven and fridge, and in a house that seats eighteen at one table that is the difference between a kitchen and a scrum. Ravenslaw House was built in 1892 for the Alnwick fishing tackle maker William Hardy, is dog friendly with four dogs allowed, and has a gate at the side into an enclosed garden.
Nine bedrooms and nine bathrooms mean nobody shares anything. Five carry four posters, three are on the ground floor, and one of those keeps a private sitting room for whoever needs to be away from the rest. The ground floor otherwise runs lounge, dining room with an open fire, conservatory, reading room and a grand piano, enough separate rooms that four dogs need never be in the same one.
Late on and the house has split three ways. The piano is being played badly. Half a dozen are out on the patio in the hot tub, two dogs stretched on the warm stone beside it waiting to see whether anyone does anything useful. The other two are flat out under the long table where the pudding was. Upstairs somebody has taken a book to the landing and is pretending not to be avoiding all of it.
Alnwick is a walk down the hill. The castle stands over the town with its garden alongside, and Barter Books fills the old railway station with enough shelving to lose an afternoon in. Behind it, Hulne Park opens miles of estate walking, and the Aln runs out through pasture towards the sea. Dogs go through most of it, and the coast is fifteen minutes east.
