Salty Tides

Westward Ho, Devon

A three bedroom house at Westward Ho with a large enclosed rear garden, two dogs welcome, a hot tub in it, and the beach a mile and a bit away on foot.

Westward Ho is the only place in England named after a novel, and the beach it took the name from runs two miles with a pebble ridge stacked behind it. Salty Tides sits back from the front: three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a wood burner with the first basket of logs included, and a hot tub in the garden. Six people and two dogs.

Large and enclosed, the garden is a rarer thing at this size of house than it ought to be. Whilst you get in the tub, your dog has real ground to work rather than a courtyard to stand in. The beach is a mile and a bit and walkable, so the morning run happens on foot and the car stays put. The Tarka Trail is four miles off and flat, and Saunton Sands at five rates a nine with us on the days you want three miles of hard sand at low water.

The allowance runs to two dogs here rather than three. There is storage for body boards, which tells you the owners expect people back sandy and have built for it rather than hoped against it. The large enclosed garden is the practical half of the same thought: somewhere two wet dogs can shake off before anybody goes indoors, which at a house this size is worth more than another bedroom would be.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Salty Tides dog friendly?

Yes, Salty Tides welcomes up to two dogs. The house has a large enclosed garden where your dogs can roam freely, and the owners have clearly thought about arriving back from the beach — there's storage for body boards and plenty of outdoor space for wet dogs to shake off before anyone heads inside.

  • Are dogs allowed at Salty Tides year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the property directly to confirm availability for your travel dates. What we can say is that the setup — enclosed garden, practical storage, and easy beach access on foot — suits a dog-friendly visit in any season.

  • What should I know before visiting Salty Tides with my dog?

The allowance is two dogs, not three, so bear that in mind if you're travelling with a bigger pack. The beach at Westward Ho is walkable from the house (a mile and a bit), meaning you can head out on foot each morning without needing the car, and the large enclosed garden gives your dogs somewhere safe to burn off energy when you're not out exploring. If you fancy further afield, the flat Tarka Trail is four miles away and Saunton Sands — three miles of hard sand at low tide — is just five.
