Sandy Bottom

Beadnell, Northumberland

A one bedroom cottage for two at Beadnell with an enclosed garden and everything on one level, two dogs welcome, moments from the bay.

Sandy Bottom is a one bedroom dog friendly cottage in Beadnell, and it sits close enough to the bay that the walk to the sand is shorter than the walk to the car. Two dogs come with it, and for a couple travelling with a pair of them it is about as neatly sized as this coast gets.

Everything is on one level. Bedroom, shower room and living space all sit on the ground floor, which for an older dog quietly removes the most tiresome obstacle in a holiday let. Outside there is an enclosed garden with furniture in it, up one step from the property, and it is the sort of small secure square that a dog will patrol twice, dismiss, and then settle in for the afternoon.

It suits a particular kind of week. Two people, two dogs, nothing to organise and no rota for the bathroom. You go out early because the dogs are already at the door, come back with sand on everything, and let the rest of the day arrange itself. Beadnell is a working village with a harbour rather than a resort, so the pace it keeps is somebody else's, and that turns out to be restful.

The bay begins a couple of hundred yards away: a mile of pale sand facing east, dunes behind it, and an old lime kiln standing over the harbour at the northern end. It is open to dogs all year and the far half stays empty whatever the month. North and south the Northumberland coast carries on in much the same way, one long run of beaches and headland with the Farne Islands sitting offshore.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Sandy Bottom dog friendly?

Yes, Sandy Bottom welcomes up to two dogs, which makes it a particularly good fit for a couple travelling with a pair of them. The cottage is single-storey throughout, there's an enclosed garden outside, and Beadnell Bay — open to dogs all year — is just a couple of hundred yards away.

  • Are dogs allowed at Sandy Bottom year round?

Yes, both the cottage and Beadnell Bay itself are open to dogs all year round. The far half of the bay tends to stay quiet whatever the season, so there's always space to stretch out without having to navigate crowds.

  • What should I know before visiting Sandy Bottom with my dog?

The cottage takes a maximum of two dogs and has everything on one level, which is worth knowing if you're travelling with an older dog who struggles with stairs. The enclosed garden is small and secure — good for a settled afternoon — and the beach is close enough that sandy paws will be a daily reality rather than an occasional one.
