Seahorse Cottage - Seaton Point

Boulmer, Northumberland

A reverse level cottage for four at Seaton Point outside Boulmer, bedrooms and shower room on the garden floor and an enclosed courtyard outside them, two dogs welcome.

Seahorse Cottage is built the wrong way up and it is the right decision. Bedrooms and shower room sit at ground level with the garden door beside them; the living space is above, behind a picture window holding the sea. Four people sleep here with a couple of dogs, and an enclosed garden and courtyard wrap the lower floor. It is dog friendly at Seaton Point, just outside Boulmer.

A hall behind the front door takes coats and wet things. Past it a double and a twin share the shower room, so everybody sleeps level with the grass and a dog goes out at any hour without meeting a staircase. Upstairs is one room: kitchen at the back, a rustic table with a wooden pew down one side, seating turned to the window and a fire for the evening.

Six o'clock and both dogs are asleep at the top of the stairs, the one spot that covers the room and the front door at once. Somebody is at the picture window with binoculars and a running commentary about a boat. Coats that should have been hung up are on the pew. Down in the courtyard the barbecue has been lit by somebody who came in salted, went out again and has not been seen since.

Boulmer is a working village and still keeps its blue cobles, drawn up on the shingle between two reefs that make a natural haven of the water. The beach is 0.7 miles from the door and the coast path comes through, running north over open ground with almost nothing built on it. Dogs are allowed on that sand in every month, and rarely anybody there to mind.
