Byers Green, County Durham
A one bedroom cottage for two in a quiet County Durham hamlet, with an enclosed garden, a wood fired hot tub and a bedroom set in the eaves, two dogs welcome.
Two dogs, in a one bedroom cottage. Most one bedroom stays take one and stop there, which is what makes Southview Farm Cottage useful to a couple travelling with two. It is a dog friendly bolthole in a quiet County Durham hamlet, refurbished throughout, with an enclosed garden out through the French doors and a wood fired hot tub standing in it.
Downstairs is one room under a vaulted ceiling: kitchen and island at one end, sofa and Smart TV at the other, garden doors between them. The bedroom is set into the eaves above with a sleigh bed and a wet room shower of its own. The garden does the real work, enclosed and patioed and immediately there, which after a long drive north with two dogs in the back is the first thing anybody wants.
Couples come here to do very little and the place is arranged for it. The hot tub is wood fired instead of plumbed, so bringing it up to heat is a slow deliberate afternoon and the dogs get the patio for the whole of it. Fishing on the Wear runs from the door on a day permit, and a dog will sleep on the bank quite happily for as long as it lasts.
Byers Green stands above the Wear between Bishop Auckland and Durham, the river path below and Auckland Castle a short drive off. Durham is near enough for the cathedral and the loop beneath the viaduct, with dogs welcome the length of it. Hamsterley Forest makes a longer day of forest track, the Bowes Museum sits west at Barnard Castle, and the North Pennines rise behind all of it.

Book with holidaycottages.co.ukFrequently Asked Questions
Is Southview Farm Cottage dog friendly?
Yes, Southview Farm Cottage welcomes two dogs, which sets it apart from many one bedroom cottages that will only take one. The enclosed garden is immediately accessible through the French doors, so your dogs have safe outdoor space as soon as you arrive.
Are dogs allowed at Southview Farm Cottage year round?
The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, and nothing in the property description suggests otherwise. If you're planning a visit at a particular time of year, it's always worth confirming directly with the owner before booking.
What should I know before visiting Southview Farm Cottage with my dog?
The cottage accepts a maximum of two dogs, so it's not suitable for larger groups travelling with more. The enclosed, patioed garden gives dogs plenty of room to settle, and the surrounding area offers good walking — there's river path access on the Wear from the property, and Hamsterley Forest makes a longer day out if you're after forest tracks.
