Behind Squire Thatchers Barn, a fenced garden looks out across open fields to Arreton and Mersley Downs, and the terrace there is where two dogs and their owners will while away the evenings. This pretty stone built cottage, lovingly converted from an 18th century barn and Grade II listed, now gives five guests a dog friendly stay on a 12 acre working farm with horses near Newchurch.

The lounge is light and spacious, where comfortable seating faces a TV and hi-fi, and the dining area enjoys a view of the downs. The adjacent kitchen is fully equipped, with a washer and a tumble dryer as well. Two dogs settle in here after walks. The ground floor holds a cosy double and a cosy twin, two of the three bedrooms, alongside a bathroom offering a bath plus a separate shower, and the third, an attractive double with an en suite, is up a spiral staircase.

The terrace has garden furniture, a lawn and a BBQ area, and a BBQ can be provided if requested in advance. The cottage also overlooks a large open grassy courtyard that ducks often visit, with stables on two sides and an 18th century threshing barn and the farmhouse on the other, which gives the dogs plenty to watch.

Delightful walks start directly from the cottage, where a dog can follow footpaths joining the Bembridge Trail over the downs, and the village of Newchurch, with its beautiful church, is within walking distance. Borthwood Copse, a great place for seeing red squirrels, and the Alverstone Mead Nature Reserve are both nearby, and a short drive leads to the sandy beaches at Shanklin and Sandown. Larger groups can book alongside Paper Barn and Stable Barn.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Squire Thatchers Barn dog friendly?

Yes, Squire Thatchers Barn welcomes up to two dogs. The barn sits on a working farm near Newchurch on the Isle of Wight, with farm tracks straight from the doorstep, a nearby ancient oak and hazel wood at Borthwood Copse, and the Arreton and Mersley Downs within reach — plenty to keep dogs (and owners) happy.

  • Are dogs allowed at Squire Thatchers Barn year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's best to check directly with the owner when booking to confirm availability for your dates.

  • What should I know before visiting Squire Thatchers Barn with my dog?

The good news is that two dogs can comfortably live on the ground floor — two of the three bedrooms and the main bathroom are all at that level, along with the kitchen, dining area and sitting room, so there's no need for dogs to tackle the spiral staircase that leads to the third bedroom. The garden at the back is small, lawned and fenced, which is handy for letting dogs out safely, and it looks straight out over the downs that you'll likely be walking across during your stay.
