There are two gateways out of the garden at St Edmunds House and they go in opposite directions. One opens onto open grassland with a footpath across the common, giving two dogs easy access to the countryside on the edge of the village. The other leads towards the village square. For a dog friendly house sleeping eight, that pair is a real asset.

The house is a substantial Grade II listed stone cottage with beamed ceilings and flagstone floors. A wood burner warms the welcoming open plan lounge and kitchen, and there is a panelled dining room with an inglenook. A second lounge has its own traditional wood burner and a door onto the terrace that the dogs will soon learn, and there is an office area for anybody who has to work. Three of the four bedrooms share the first floor, the master with a bath built into a window recess looking out to the castle and hills.

Fires get lit in both lounges in the evening because nobody can agree which room they are in. One of them has two dogs flat out before it, happily spent after an afternoon on the common. Out in the large fenced garden there are lawns, colourful shrubberies, a covered fish pond and a terrace with a barbecue, and after dark the powerful telescope comes out for the night skies.

From the house you can walk straight onto a network of footpaths that runs west towards Kimmeridge and Lulworth and east to Studland, with its miles of sandy beaches and dunes. Closer to home, the garden opens onto the common, and that is the walk a dog gets before anybody has decided on the day.
