St Michaels Church

Soudley, Gloucestershire

A converted church sleeping eight at Soudley in the Forest of Dean, with an enclosed garden to the rear, a shower room reached from outside and two dogs welcome.

St Michaels Church stopped holding services and became somewhere for eight to sleep, and the restoration left the wooden door, the panelling and a nave you step straight into. Two dogs come with it, dog friendly, five star, an enclosed garden behind. The ground floor shower room has its own door to the outside, which in a house where dogs come back off forest trails is the most useful thing in it.

Eight fit across four bedrooms, with a bunk room on the ground floor and three bathrooms. The body of the church is one tall space with an open fire in it, and under that much roof it warms the place in a way a radiator does not. Two dogs stretched out under that roof is worth the drive.

Picture the end of a day. The forest trails run from the edge of the village, so the way home is on foot and not in a car, two dogs carrying half the Dean in their coats, and the shower room takes them before the nave does. Then the fire, eight people in a room built for a hundred, and a pair of dogs asleep where a pew used to stand.

Underneath this part of the forest the iron ran in seams men worked by hand for centuries, and at Clearwell Caves you walk down into nine of the old chambers, the tools left where they stopped. The village keeps the museum of all that on its own doorstep, charcoal and coal and the freeminers still entitled to dig here. Two dogs get woodland in every direction from the gate, which is most of what the Dean is for.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is St Michaels Church dog friendly?

Yes, St Michaels Church welcomes up to two dogs. It's a five-star rated stay with an enclosed garden to the rear, so your dogs have a secure outdoor space, and the forest trails of the Dean start right from the edge of the village.

  • Are dogs allowed at St Michaels Church year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions, and with forest trails on the doorstep in every direction, it's the kind of place that works just as well in the depths of winter as in summer. That said, it's always worth checking directly with the property when you book.

  • What should I know before visiting St Michaels Church with my dog?

One of the most practical features for dog owners is the ground floor shower room, which has its own door to the outside — perfect for rinsing dogs off after a day on the forest trails before they come inside. The enclosed garden gives them a safe space to stretch out, and woodland walks are accessible on foot straight from the village, so there's no need to load muddy dogs into the car at the end of the day.
