Stag Cottage was once the stable groom's cottage, and now it welcomes guests as a beautiful dog friendly hideaway for four in Withypool, in the heart of Exmoor National Park. Three dogs are welcome, the walks start straight from the door, and the peace and quiet of the countryside is all around, within the Exmoor Dark Skies Reserve.
The hallway takes the coats and shoes, and the cosy lounge beyond is where the wood burner crackles away while the dogs stretch out in front of it. Meals are around the table for four in the open plan kitchen. Upstairs are two bedrooms, a king with a spectacular view and a room with two single beds, and a bathroom where a beautiful roll top bath sits alongside a separate shower.
Well behaved dogs are welcome upstairs, provided guests bring their own bedding for the bedrooms, from sheets and duvets to pillows, and agree it with the owners before arrival. Outside, the fully enclosed garden is ready for al fresco meals, furnished for dining and fitted with a charcoal BBQ, and a washing machine and dryer wait in the former tack room, shared with the cottage next door. Families booking both cottages can have the secure gate between them unlocked, so the two work as one.
Exmoor has a fantastic range of walks with spectacular views, and Tarr Steps in the wooded valley of the River Barle is a lovely outing with a dog. Horse riding and fishing are nearby too. A short drive brings the North Devon coast, with Porlock, Lynmouth and Lynton, the Valley of the Rocks plus the coastal walk from Heddon's Mouth to Woody Bay, and Dunster and Minehead are within easy reach as well.
