Stonelea

Westward Ho, Devon

A three bedroom house near Westward Ho with a south facing enclosed garden, two dogs welcome, three bathrooms and an unusually early half past two arrival.

The half past two arrival is a small thing that turns out to matter. Most of this list opens the door at four or five, by which point a dog that has been in the car since morning has run out of patience. Stonelea lets you in at half two. It is a three bedroom house near Westward Ho with three bathrooms, a wood burner and two dogs welcome.

South facing, landscaped and enclosed, with a dining table out in it, the garden catches whatever sun North Devon is giving away. Westward Ho beach is one and two tenths of a mile off and runs into Northam Burrows, a stretch of common land and dunes behind the pebble ridge that is as good a dog walk as the sand itself. The Tarka Trail is four and a half miles, and Saunton Sands at just under five rates a nine with us.

Ground floor sleeping, three bathrooms between six people so nobody queues in the morning, and two dogs. The early door and the enclosed garden together make this the sensible choice at the end of a long drive from the north or the east, because the dog is out on grass within a minute of the handbrake going on rather than pacing a lay-by somewhere on the A39 until four o'clock.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Stonelea dog friendly?

Yes, Stonelea welcomes up to two dogs. The house has a south facing enclosed garden with a dining table in it, so your dogs can be out on grass almost as soon as you arrive — which is a genuine comfort at the end of a long drive.

  • Are dogs allowed at Stonelea year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, but we'd recommend checking directly with the owner to confirm availability for your dates.

  • What should I know before visiting Stonelea with my dog?

A couple of things stand out. First, the arrival time is half past two, which is earlier than most comparable places and makes a real difference if your dog has been in the car since morning. Second, the garden is enclosed, so once you're in, you're properly in — dog out, kettle on. Westward Ho beach is just over a mile away and connects to Northam Burrows, a stretch of common land and dunes that makes for excellent walking alongside the sand.
