Seven in the morning and the French doors are already open, because one of the dogs decided they should be. Sunnysands stands at the edge of Beadnell, dog friendly, five people across three bedrooms and two dogs on the booking, five minutes from the sand. The lawn those doors give onto is enclosed and takes the sun from first thing, and the table on the decking will go unused for another three hours.
The lounge those doors belong to fills the front of the house, the kitchen behind with a breakfast table under the window. Everything a dog does happens on this floor: in from the garden, over the boards, down in front of whoever sat first. Upstairs the king has a Juliet balcony over the roofs to open water and the islands, an en-suite behind it, a double and a single alongside.
Five is an awkward number and this house is built for it. Three bedrooms and a bathroom at the end of the landing means a couple, a pair and a single each get a door instead of somebody drawing the sofa. Add two dogs and the ground floor stops being furniture and starts being circulation. Families with a teenager who wants a door will find it fits.
Beadnell Bay curves south from the village in one sweep, and at the far end the Long Nanny burn cuts across the sand to the sea. The dunes above it hold one of the largest Arctic tern colonies in the country, wardened all summer, with a footbridge keeping walkers and dogs clear of the nests. Out of season the southern end goes back to empty sand, and dogs are on it all year.
