Beadnell is small enough that the store, the pubs and the sand fall on one short walk, and Sunnyside Cove sits in a quiet corner off it. Blackout blinds are fitted to both bedroom windows, which matters more in June than people expect.
Indoors it is all one room, French doors down the side of it, a wood burner at the lounge end and a breakfast bar between kitchen and table. Both bedrooms open off the hallway: a king, and a twin holding a trundle for a child. There is one bathroom with a walk-in shower, and the route a dog takes from its bed to the grass crosses no stairs at all.
What a bungalow buys at this size is that none of the layout has to be negotiated. Two couples, or a family with a small child on the trundle, and one dog with the place to itself. Outside, patio and lawn are separate ground, so the fire pit is lit on one while the table stays laid on the other. A shed takes the bikes and whatever came back wet.
Ebb's Nook is the low finger of rock at the north end of the bay, running past the harbour into open water, and on top of it lie the excavated foundations of a twelfth century chapel to St Ebba. Getting there is beach, then grass along the shelf, a mile out and back with sea on three sides at the end. Dogs are on it all year, and rarely anybody else.
