Swan Bank Cottage is a traditional terraced cottage in the heart of Hay-on-Wye, the town famous around the world for its books, and it appeals to the nature lover and the culture lover in equal measure. Up to four guests can stay, along with one dog, and this dog friendly cottage is 0.5 miles from the Warren, a beautiful riverside meadow on the Wye.

The open-plan living area is light and spacious, with wood flooring, hand-picked artwork on the walls, a large rug and a wood burner for which the first basket of logs is provided. There is comfortable seating and a Smart TV in the lounge area and a table for four, and the dog soon finds its place by the wood burner. Through in the separate snug, a well-stocked bookcase from the owner's own collection and a large selection of board games are ready for a quiet evening.

The newly updated kitchen has everything from a microwave to a milk frother, and an open staircase leads to a king-size bedroom with an Emma mattress, a twin, and the bathroom. From the back of the cottage, steps and a path along the edge of the neighbour's garden lead to the cottage's own private enclosed garden, furnished with a table and chairs and blessed with open views, where the dog can sit out with you.

Hay-on-Wye has more than 20 bookstores, an international Festival of Arts and Literature, cafes, restaurants and quirky independent shops, and its 12th-century castle has recently reopened after restoration. Canoeing and kayaking on the Wye are popular, and the Wye Valley Walk, Offa's Dyke Path and the Black Mountains are all there for days on foot with the dog, with Hay Bluff for the intrepid.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Swan Bank Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Swan Bank Cottage welcomes dogs. The cottage has a small enclosed garden behind the house, reached via a flight of steps out of the back door, so your dog has a safe outdoor space to use without needing to head straight into town.

  • Are dogs allowed at Swan Bank Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the owner directly to confirm availability for your travel dates. What we do know is that the cottage is set up with dogs in mind, and the walks nearby — Mouse Castle Wood and Cusop Dingle — are good in every season.

  • What should I know before visiting Swan Bank Cottage with my dog?

One dog is included on the booking, so if you're hoping to bring more than one it's best to check with the owner first. The enclosed garden is accessed up a flight of steps from the back of the house, which is something to be aware of depending on your dog's mobility. Cusop Dingle, a short walk from the cottage, has a brook running through it — if your dog goes off the lead down there, expect them back wet to the shoulder and very pleased with themselves.
