On the entrance floor a hall takes the boots, then lounge and dining sit round a wood burner, with a small separate seating corner facing the hills. The kitchen and a WC are on the same level and the garage doubles as the utility. Below are the three bedrooms and a games room holding a pool table, a dartboard and a PlayStation. The super king has French doors straight onto the patio, so the dog goes out at whatever hour it decides on.
Downstairs, an argument has developed around the pool table. It is ten at night. The Coquet runs under the bridge at the end of the road and through the town, a path along it, picnic tables and a playground on the near bank. Downstream it enters a wooded gorge and comes out at Brinkburn, where an Augustinian priory church stands alone in a bend of the river with nothing round it but trees, roofless for three hundred years and then put back. Dogs are on the riverside path the whole way, and it stays level.
