The garden gate does the job of a front door here. You come off the lane through an enclosed lawn with mature planting and a bench under the window, and two dogs are through the lot before anybody has found the key. The Archers Cottage sleeps five at Longhoughton, a dog friendly village a mile back from the sea. A decked seating area sits round the back.
The lounge takes the front of the cottage, two big sofas, a stone feature wall and a wood burner under the television, with the garden through the window. A ground floor bedroom is what decides this one. Howick Hall is a mile and a half inland, a Georgian house with an arboretum grown up around it and a long walk down through the trees to the sea at the bottom of the grounds, which is how the family used to reach the beach. Dogs walk it the whole way down. The shore either side is low rock shelf and small pockets of sand, and the sky over Longhoughton goes properly dark at night.
