1 / 24The Archers Cottage
Longhoughton, Northumberland
A three bedroom cottage for five at Longhoughton with a ground floor bedroom, an enclosed front garden and a decked area at the rear, two dogs welcome, a mile from the sea.
The garden gate does the job of a front door here. You come off the lane through an enclosed lawn with mature planting and a bench under the window, and two dogs are through the lot before anybody has found the key. The Archers Cottage sleeps five at Longhoughton, a dog friendly village a mile back from the sea. A decked seating area sits round the back.
The lounge takes the front of the cottage, two big sofas, a stone feature wall and a wood burner under the television, with the garden through the window. The kitchen and diner opens off it, and a utility beyond holds the fridge, the machines and the whole wet end of a coastal week, coats and boots and dogs together. A cloakroom sits beside the kitchen.
A ground floor bedroom is what decides this one. The twin lies on the far side of the living space with a fireplace and a view of the garden, and it zips together into a super king, so the party can be a couple and three, a family of five, or two people who have finished with stairs. A king and a single sit above, and two dogs sleep wherever the downstairs door is left open.
Howick Hall is a mile and a half inland, a Georgian house with an arboretum grown up around it and a long walk down through the trees to the sea at the bottom of the grounds, which is how the family used to reach the beach. Dogs walk it the whole way down. The shore either side is low rock shelf and small pockets of sand, and the sky over Longhoughton goes properly dark at night.
