The Botany Garden Cottage sits at Christon Bank in open fields back from the coast, everything on one floor and an inglenook taking most of one wall. It sleeps four, allows two dogs, and the garden behind is enclosed and takes the afternoon. Dog friendly and a mile inland is a useful combination here: the quiet is real and the sand is still a walk.
One floor and no stairs anywhere puts the beds, the bathrooms and the garden door on a single level, which removes an entire category of problem from a week away with a dog. Lounge and dining share one space over wood boards, the inglenook at one end with a burner set into it. The galley kitchen is tiled. The twin at the front keeps its own shower room and the double lies at the back.
Four adults sharing, or a family, with a pair of dogs and no wish to be in a resort. Christon Bank is a hamlet on the railway with fields all round, so the evenings go properly dark and the stars arrive as they do not 2 miles east. Both bedrooms have a bathroom to hand, which for four adults decides whether the week works.
The coast is 1.5 miles down the lane. Low Newton stands at the end of it, a square of white cottages open on the side that faces the sea, and behind the dunes Newton Pool holds reeds, nesting birds and a hide looking over the water. Football Hole is the small cove north of the village, reached on foot and generally empty. Dogs are welcome the length of that shore.
